About
The Dionysus Ensemble is a virtuosic chamber collective and the first professional musical ensemble to be officially attached to the Commonwealth.
Recognised for their technical excellence and cultural leadership, the group was awarded the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society (RPS) Award in 2021. Their international prestige is anchored by high-profile performances for the Royal Family, including a live internationally broadcast performance at Westminster Abbey for the Commonwealth Day service in the presence of HM Queen Elizabeth II, as well as private performances at Marlborough House for the Commonwealth Secretary-General and heads of state from all 53 member nations.
Far exceeding the traditional boundaries of a chamber group, the ensemble operates as a highly versatile collective - scaling from an intimate string quartet to a 30-piece chamber orchestra. The roster features an elite tier of musicians who hold principal positions in orchestras such as the Philharmonia, English National Opera, and Academy of St Martin in the Fields, alongside session artists who have recorded for global icons like Stevie Wonder and major film franchises including The Lord of the Rings. Grounded in a philosophy of "Storytelling Music for Social Change," The Dionysus Ensemble delivers a world-class musical signature that bridges classical heritage, cross-cultural fusion, and high-stakes diplomatic representation.
Projects
Historical Revivals & World Premiere Recordings
The ensemble is a leading authority in the research, transcription, and recording of lost historical manuscripts. They have achieved critical acclaim for their world-premiere recordings of astronomer-composer William Herschel’s 18th-century sonatas—music that had not been heard in over 200 years. Their prolific studio portfolio is broadcast globally across networks including BBC Radio 3, the BBC World Service, and Australia's ABC Classic. This pillar serves producers, broadcasters, and heritage organizations requiring elite, scholarly precision combined with vibrant, modern recording techniques.
Diplomatic Commissions & Global Events
The ensemble serves as the Ensemble in Association for The Commonwealth Resounds. They are commissioned by the Commonwealth Secretariat and the Mayor of London for events such as the Platinum Jubilee and the United Commonwealth Covid Music Project. Their work includes performances for the Royal Family, the British High Commission, and international heads of state.
The Cross-Cultural Collective & Social Impact
Dionysus commissions new music to address specific social and environmental themes. Recent projects include the Windrush Reflections suite, the female-empowerment focused Platinum Suite, and a 2025 commission regarding environmental biodiversity. They have led international outreach initiatives in the Solomon Islands and for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
